No. 2 Iowa State rolled through its 2024 NCAA Tournament opener and now will face a tougher test against No. 7 Washington State in the second round in the East Region of the bracket.
The Cyclones sent 15-seeded South Dakota State home with a 82-65 victory in a game where Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger coached against his former team in Omaha, Nebraska.
For the first time since a win against Nevada in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, the Cyclones had five players finish in double figures.
Milan Momcilovic led the way with a game-high 19 points. Tamin Lipsey scored 17 with seven assists while Keshon Gilbert had 15 points with five assists and a game-high three steals. Curtis Jones (11) and Hason Ward (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts for the Cyclones.
Washington State outlasted No. 10 Drake 66-61 in another first-round game. Isaac Jones had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.
Washington State have to shoot much better from the field to beat powerful Iowa State after making just 29.6% of their shots against Drake.
The Cougars are 21-0 when leading at halftime.
