The Big Ten is coming down to the wire with the end of the season drawing near. Iowa remains the top team in the conference but is still tied with Ohio State after a close overtime loss in January. Tonight, the Hawkeyes take on Penn State, another team looking to bolster its Big Ten standing with a big win.
Iowa has won three consecutive games since the OSU loss, including double-digit wins over Nebraska and Northwestern before an eight-point win over Maryland this past weekend. Penn State, meanwhile, fell to Michigan on Saturday and snapped a six game losing streak.
This is the first meeting between the two sides this season, though Iowa took down Penn State in both contests in 2023.
Iowa guard Caitlin Clark continues to be a one-player wrecking crew this season. She leads all scorers in women's college basketball with 32.4 points – almost five points more than the USC's JuJu Watkins – and should break Kelsey Plum's NCAA career scoring record by next week. Clark enters this game with 3,462 points, 65 shy of matching Plum's total of 3,527.
Clark has looked even more dynamic recently after she averaged 39 points in the Hawkeyes' previous four games. She also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds, 7.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
Guards Ashley Owusu and Makenna Marisa pace Penn State. Owusu has averaged 18.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in seven contests this year following her return from a medical issue. She transferred from Virginia Tech. Marisa averaged 15.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Both teams score at a high rate. Iowa leads the nation with 91.9 points per game, while Penn State averages 86.7 points per game – fifth in the country. The Nittany Lions allow 69.2 points per game while the Hawkeyes allow 68.5 points per game.
