Indiana (20-13) is back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016. First-year coach Mike Woodson has weathered an up-and-down first season, and the Hoosiers made a run to the First Four by reaching the semifinals in the Big Ten tournament.

Wyoming (25-8) returns to the tournament for the first time since 2015 with second-year coach Jeff Linder. The Cowboys split their last 10 games after a hot start in the Mountain West Conference.

The winner will face No. 5 St. Mary’s in the first round on Thursday. Who has this edge in the battle for a No. 12 seed?

Indiana vs. Wyoming odds

  • Spread: Indiana -4
  • Over/under: 133
  • Moneyline: Indiana -178, Wyoming +146

Three betting trends to watch

—The Hoosiers are 14-8 against the spread (ATS) as a favorite this season, but that record drops to 3-6 ATS when favored by five points or less.

—Wyoming is 6-7 straight up (S/U) as an underdog this season, but they are 8-5 ATS in those games. The Cowboys are 6-6 S/U as an underdog of five points or less, which makes this a true toss-up play.

—Indiana is 4-0 ATS in neutral-site games this season. The Cowboys are 1-3 ATS in the same situation.

Indiana key players

The Hoosiers revolve around junior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis (18.1 ppg., 8.2 rpg.), a 6-9, 245-pounder who averaged 25 points in three Big Ten tournament games. Xavier Johnson (12.3 ppg.) and Race Thompson (11.5 ppg.) also average double figures, and Parker Stewart (6.4 ppg.) and Miller Kopp (6.3 ppg.) round out the starting five. Trey Galloway (5.8 ppg.) is an impact sixth man.

Wyoming key players

Same deal here. Forward Graham Ike also is a 6-9, 245-pounder who averages 19.6 points and 6.9 rebounds. Hunter Maldonado is an explosive guard who averages 18.4 points per game, and Drake Jeffries (10.5 ppg.), Jeremiah Oden (7.9 ppg.) and Xavier DuSell (7.8) round out a talented starting five.

Best individual matchup: Trayce Jackson-Davis vs. Graham Ike

Who else would it be? Jackson-Davis and Ike are long forwards who can bring the ball up and create mismatches on both sides. This is a fantastic matchup, but can one get the other in foul trouble? Ike had 15 games with four or more fouls. Jackson-Davis had three. Look for Indiana to try to exploit that statistic.

Indiana vs. Wyoming stat to know

Indiana ranks 231st in Division 1 with a 69.9% free-throw shooting percentage, which would appear to be a liability. The Hoosiers, however, have improved on this significantly down the stretch, shooting 77.8% from the line over its last seven games. This could be a difference maker in a close game.

Get to know ... Drake Jeffries, Wyoming

Jeffries, a 6-5 guard who played at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, in 2020, could be the X-factor player in this game. He averages 6.8 three-point attempts per game and hits 42% from behind the arc. Only five players in the NCAA tournament have a higher three-point percentage.

Indiana vs. Wyoming prediction

Wyoming has higher efficiency ratings on both ends, and it won’t be a surprise when the Cowboys are leading at halftime. Indiana, however, will stay patient with Jackson-Davis in the second half, and guard Xavier Johnson, a Pitt transfer, will control the tempo. Indiana knocks down the clutch free throws down the stretch and advances to the next round in a game that will stay tight throughout.

Final score: Indiana 74, Wyoming 68
