The 2024 NCAA Tournament will officially tip off Tuesday with a First Four game between Howard and Wagner in Dayton, Ohio.

The pair of No. 16 seeds will play for the right to face No. 1 North Carolina in the West Region of the bracket in Thursday's first round.

The First Four began in 1999. It was originally one game. Now, it's four games. There are 32 automatic bids and 36 at large bids into the tournament. The four lowest-seeded teams from both avenues into the bracket play each other to trim the tournament from 68 to 64 teams.

Howard earned its automatic bid from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, with the Bison winning their conference tournament against Delaware State last Saturday, 70-67.

Jordan Hairston, who's averaging 6.1 points this year, exploded for 18 points against Delaware State, his second-highest single-game point total for the season. He went 4-of-7 from the field and made all seven free throws he attempted.

Wagner earned at automatic bid from the Northeast Conference tournament, defeating Merrimack in the final last Tuesday, 54-47.

The Seahawks have been playing only six players, and Tahron Allen led the way with 22 points in the final. He finished 8-of-16 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. He and two other players played all 40 minutes of the game.
