How many points did Cooper Flagg score today? Montverde overcomes slow start to beat Compass Prep, advance in Chipotle Nationals image

Montverde passed its first test in its attempt to capture a national championship, dispatching an upstart Compass Prep (AZ) side to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of Chipotle Nationals.

It was a showcase defined by the Eagles' stars, namely standout recruits Liam McNeeley, Derik Queen, Robert Wright, and, most notably, Cooper Flagg.

Flagg was the standout, looking every bit like the No. 1 prospect he's been tipped to be throughout his adolescence. The incoming Duke recruit showed flashes of brilliance in his time on the floor, ending the day with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. His influence went beyond the scoreboard, though. He lurked around the interior, deterring Compass Prep from driving toward the rim, and when he was out in space, he fared well, plucking his opposition numbers with regularity while contesting shots all the way outside the arc.

It was just the sort of showing Flagg has become known for over the years. Although he's far from the finished product, his athleticism, foot speed, and polish on both ends of the floor were immediately evident in his 31 minutes of game time.

It wasn't all roses for Flagg and the Eagles. They fell behind early amid a torrent of triples by Vyctorius Miller and Jeremiah Fears.

However, powered by Flagg, McNeeley, Wright, and Queen, Montverde weathered the storm. A dominant third-quarter showing put Kevin Boyle's side out in front. The Eagles wouldn't relinquish that lead in the fourth, overwhelming the Dragons' lineup as the clock dwindled down.

What awaits Flagg and Montverde in the next round? A date with Columbus (OH) and its supernova, Cameron Boozer. Boozer is seen as the prospective No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft. As such, he should provide a solid litmus test for Flagg's skillset. The basketball world will be watching intently to see how he responds.

Cooper Flagg live score, stats, highlights from Montverde vs. Compass Prep in 2024 Chipotle Nationals

9:58 p.m.: Montverde putting the finishing touches on a big-time win over Compass Prep. McNeeley and Flagg combined to leave their mark on the proceedings, combining for an alley-oop before denying Miller on the other end with a vicious rejection. Impressive rally by the Eagles, who will face Boozer and Columbus in the next round of the tournament.

9:44 p.m.: Flagg is back out on the floor as expected, attempting his three free throws after being fouled by Miller.

9:41 p.m.: Montverde, Duke and college basketball proper held their collective breath after Flagg stayed on the floor following a foul by Miller while he was attempting a three-point attempt. He's holding his foot as he gets up. Looks like he'll attempt to carry on, although Eagles coach Kevin Boyle appears to want to give him a breather by calling a timeout. Watch this space.

End of third quarter: Montverde 49, Compass Prep 33

9:36 p.m.: Montverde ends the frame in style, dropping two straight three pointers, one of which came from Asa Newell — the No. 14 prospect in the 2024 class and a Georgia commit — and Robert Wright, who rose above Miller, sank his treble, then wiped his finger across his nose like Atlanta icon Young Thug.

The Eagles have turned this game around in a big way, embarking on a 25-5 run to turn this contest on its head.

9:29 p.m.: Miller drops a triple to give Compass Prep its first points of the frame. Took them nearly seven minutes, but they're finally on the board. The Dragons have some way to go to regain their advantage over the hulking Eagles.

9:26 p.m.: Flagg just gave viewers a glimpse into his eye-catching athleticism. The future Blue Devil nearly hammered home a one-handed outback through the mire, only being denied after absorbing a foul.

9:24 p.m.: Flagg continues to make his presence felt on both ends of the floor. Rose through contact before firing a whizzed effort into the cup on one end. Then, he leapt like a salmon to contest an errant three ball on the other.

He's up to 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting tonight.

9:19 p.m.: Montverde takes its first lead of the ballgame after Liam McNeeley buries a layup through contact on the fast break. What a recovery by the Eagles, who found themselves in deep water during the game's opening moments.

End of second quarter: Compass Prep 28, Montverde 24

9:05 p.m.: Flagg's influence has become more evident as tonight's contest wears on. He just fired an inch-perfect pass into the paint to set up a layup as the second quarter came to a close.

9:03 p.m.: Flagg is starting to percolate. Just sank a triple from the top of the key. Now, he added an and-one, shrugging off contact before dropping a flower into the dish. The Eagles are just two possessions away.

9:01 p.m.: Compass Prep's standouts have been Miller and Jeremiah Fears, a pair of high-level guards destined for Division I futures. Fears shines through again with another triple to push Prep a little future away from its opposition.

8:54 p.m.: Hasn't been a classic thus far, with both sides combining for 14 turnovers compared to 13 made field goals. Montverde still behind in this one, although Queen does have a chance to bring the Eagles within one possession.

End of first quarter: Compass Prep 17, Montverde 11

8:42 p.m.: Montverde has worked its way back into the game off the back of Maryland commit Derik Queen. Queen has raced down the floor on two separate occasions to draw fouls, both of which have resulted in free throws. Impressive showing so far by the McDonalds All-American.

8:29 p.m.: Compass Prep has started the day the better of the two sides, quickly opening up a 12-1 lead. Miller just sank a cold-blooded three from the corner to extend the lead. Seems that Compass Prep is delivering a little trash talk to add to the hysterics, too.

8:26 p.m.: Compass immediately goes after Flagg, with Luke Bamgboye throwing down a reverse jam over the incoming Duke recruit Flagg.

8:24 p.m.: The ball is tipped and away we go! Montverde vs. Compass Prep! Only on ESPNU.

Flagg and Montverde is up next.

8:00 p.m.: Thursday's game will take place a little later than 8:00 p.m. ET. Prolific Prep's contest with Link Academy entered double overtime after AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 player in the class of 2025, sank a game-tying three pointer.

7:40 p.m.: Columbus star Vyctorius Miller announced his intention to attend LSU, joining the likes of Ben Simmons, Shaquille O'Neal and Cam Thomas as players to don the maize-and-purple in Baton Rouge.

6:55 p.m.: If Flagg and Montverde do advance to the next round of Chipotle Nationals, they'll face off against No. 5 Columbus and No. 2 prospect Cameron Boozer. Boozer put up a stat line of 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead Columbus beyond No. 4 Long Island Lutheran.
