TUSCALOOSA, Ala.  — Graduate transfer Christophe Varidel won't be able to play basketball for Alabama.

Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant said Friday that the former player for Division II Chaminade is unable to play because of an injury he sustained before enrolling at Alabama.

Grant says the 6-foot-3 guard hasn't been able to participate in individual workouts or team activities. He says they reached a mutual decision that "it is in the best interest of his long-term health and well-being for him to step away from basketball at this time."

Varidel will continue pursuing his master's degree in sports management. He says it's disappointing to end his college career this way. He spent three years at Florida Gulf Coast, then averaged 21.2 points played in five games before getting hurt last season.
