When Iowa meets LSU for a trip to the 2024 Final Four on the line, it will be the final time that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese go head-to-head at the collegiate level.

This year's Elite Eight matchup between the Hawkeyes and Tigers is a rematch of last year's national championship game and one of the most highly anticipated games in college basketball history. And while the individual rivalry between Clark and Reese assumed the spotlight in the title game, their history as competitors goes further back.

Monday's regional final will mark the fifth head-to-head meeting between Clark and Reese, who, before attending LSU, spent two years at Maryland, a Big Ten conference foe of Iowa.

Reese's time playing the Big Ten set up the first three meetings with Clark's Hawkeyes, one of which came on the postseason stage.

Ahead of their final duel, here's a look back at how each of the first four games played out.

Two meetings between Reese and Clark have come with a championship on the line. In addition to the 2023 national championship game, Reese's Terrapins defeated the Hawkeyes 104-84 in the 2021 Big Ten tournament championship.

Here's a closer look at each of the first four matchups.

WNBA Mock Draft: Projecting where Angel Reese, other March Madness stars land after Caitlin Clark

Feb. 23, 2021: Maryland 111, Iowa 93

Angel Reese stats: 8 points (2-2 FG), 3 rebounds, 1 assist in 11 minutes

Caitlin Clark stats: 34 points (11-20 FG), 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 turnovers in 32 minutes

While both were heralded recruits in the high school class of 2020, Clark and Reese had very different roles as freshmen. Clark, a Day 1 starter, was given the keys as soon as she stepped foot on campus while a foot injury suffered in the first week of the season limited Reese, forcing her to grow into a larger role over time.

The difference is evident in the stats — Maryland earned a dominant win but Clark sank nine triples en route to 34 points.

March 13, 2021: (1) Maryland 104, (6) Iowa 84 (Big Ten tournament championship)

Angel Reese stats: 6 points (2-8 FG), 6 rebounds, 2 assists in 16 minutes

Caitlin Clark stats: 21 points (7-18 FG), 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 turnovers in 36 minutes

Weeks after the first meeting, the two teams met again for the Big Ten tournament title. While Maryland was the conference's top seed, Iowa made an impressive run to the title game as the conference's sixth seed.

The Terps proved to be too much as they earned a 20-point win. Reese pulled down six rebounds in limited time while Clark stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Feb. 14, 2022: Maryland 81, Iowa 69

Angel Reese stats: 25 points (9-15 FG), 13 rebounds (6 offensive), 2 assists, 2 blocks in 33 minutes

Caitlin Clark stats: 19 points (7-25 FG), 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 10 turnovers in 40 minutes

It was a star showcase once the two were sophomores.

With the Terrapins in Iowa City for a top-25 matchup, Reese put on a show with 25 points, 13 boards and a couple of blocks. As a team, Maryland proved to be too much for Iowa, which saw its sophomore star struggle. Clark shot just 28.0 percent from the field while committing 10 turnovers in the 12-point home loss.

April 2, 2023: (3) LSU 102, (2) Iowa 85 (National championship)

Angel Reese stats: 15 points (5-12 FG), 10 rebounds (6 offensive), 5 assists, 3 steals in 29 minutes

Caitlin Clark stats: 30 points (9-22 FG), 2 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 turnovers in 35 minutes

Two years after meeting for a conference tournament title, Clark and Reese would again go head-to-head in their biggest matchup to date.

The Tigers overpowered the Hawkeyes and Reese's contributions of 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists played a large role. Clark did all she could, sinking eight 3s as part of a 30-point effort, but Iowa couldn't match LSU's scoring exploits — three different Tigers scored 20-plus points.

Why did Angel Reese transfer from Maryland to LSU?

After a turbulent freshman campaign with Maryland, Reese bounced back to average 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Despite making that leap, Reese entered the transfer portal following the 2021-22 season and decided to move on to LSU.

“I needed a fresh start, a coach to push me to get me to the next level,” Reese said of the decision in a 2023 New York Times interview. "I want to be a top draft pick and I want to win at the highest level, so being able to come to LSU and build with Coach Mulkey and everything she has done in one year was just something that was important to me.”

During her time in Baton Rouge, La., Reese has earned multiple All-American honors, won a national championship and was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
