The Utah Jazz have re-signed their superstar Lauri Markkanen for the next five years, and are giving him $238 million dollars, per Adrian Wojnarowski.
Of that $238 million, $220 million of it is new money from the extension. Markkanen had one year, and $18 million left on his contract. The Jazz used their left over salary cap money to pay him $24 million more this next season, and then four years, $196 million with no options. This new contract also makes him untradeable for the entire 2024-25 season.
While he isn’t not tradable for a year, like previous reports thought, he will not be tradable for six months. This makes him available for trade after the February 6th deadline, meaning he can be traded as soon as the next offseason hits.
Whether or not the Jazz keeps him relies solely on this season. If the Jazz are a lottery pick once again, they may or may not trade him. If they somehow get in serious contention, they may be buyers to give Markkanen some help. If they make the play-in tournament and/or playoffs and lose early, they may go into rebuild mode. If that happens, Markkanen will probably be on the first flight out of there for another team's assets.
