The WNBA is officially expanding outside of the United States, as commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that the league awarded Toronto, Canada, its next expansion team.
The Toronto team will begin playing in the 2026 season, making it the 14th organization in the WNBA. 12 teams are taking part in the 2024 season, but the Golden State Valkyries will start play in 2025 in San Francisco.
“Bringing a WNBA team to Toronto represents an important milestone for our league," Engelbert said. "As we continue to expand both domestically and outside the United States."
Among those in attendance to celebrate the expansion was famous rapper Drake, who is fresh off a recent beef with another industry superstar, Kendrick Lamar. It's one of his first public appearances since the back-and-forth, and fans could not resist grilling the Canadian rapper.
