Interim coach Sam Mitchell likely will not be part of the Timberwolves' search for a new coach.
Mitchell took over for Flip Saunders after Saunders took a leave of absence to receive treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Saunders died just over a month later.

While The Vertical reported Mitchell would be part of the process, two sources told the Associated Press the team will begin the coaching search "exclusively with candidates outside the organization."
Mitchell, who led the Raptors for four seasons and was the NBA Coach of the Year in 2007, went 29-53 with the Timberwolves. The 29 wins this season marked a 13-win improvement from the previous season.
Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor has hired a search firm, and will give the new coach full autonomy to build out the front office, according to the Vertical. The search will reportedly include former NBA coaches Jeff Van Gundy, Tom Thibodeau and Scott Brooks.
Saunders was also the team president of basketball operations. General manager Milt Newton had been filling that role. According to the AP, the team will also seek a new president from outside the organization.
