The Fifth Quarter: Sixers can't buy a win as Warriors approach record image

The first month of the NBA season has been defined by two teams with vastly different streaks.

The Warriors have yet to lose a game, while the 76ers can't win one.

The Sixers almost ended their streak Monday, but fell 100-95 to the Timberwolves despite holding a five-point lead with 2:30 remaining. The loss was their 15th in a row to begin this season and their 25th in a row dating to last season. One more loss will tie the NBA record for longest losing streak with the 2010-11 Cavaliers and last season's Sixers team.

Meanwhile, the Warriors (15-0) are one win away from setting an NBA standard for consecutive wins to start a season. The only thing standing in their way is a Lakers team led by a proud, but rapidly declining, Kobe Bryant.

So whose streak will end first? As great as the Warriors have been playing, at some point, what goes up must come down. And it's pretty obvious that you can't bet on the Sixers. Heck, even the Sixers can't bet on the Sixers.

Stud of the night

The Hornets appeared to be mailing it in through three quarters, allowing the Kings to build a 22-point lead late in the period. Then Kemba Walker got into 2011 March Madness mode, scoring 21 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter to help guide his team to a 127-122 overtime win.

Dud of the night

The Knicks earned this award as a team. Carmelo Anthony (21) and  Kristaps Porzingis (20) accounted for 41 of the team's 70 points in a loss to the Heat. The Knicks scored 30 points in the first half and shot 32 percent for the game.

Looking ahead

Lakers (2-11) at Warriors (15-0), 10:30 p.m. ET: There are six games on the schedule Tuesday, but the final game of the night will make the other five merely a footnote. The crowd at Oracle Arena is always in a frenzy, but expect it to reach NBA Finals-like levels as the Warriors look to make history.
