The Golden State Warriors dynasty is far from over as they return to the NBA Finals for the sixth time in eight years.

Anchored by their core trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, there will be plenty of familiar faces when the Warriors face off against the Boston Celtics.

One of the hardest parts of defending the Warriors is trying to contain their two sharpshooters, Curry and Thompson. The duo is considered to be the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history, earning the nickname, "the Splash Brothers" for their ability "wet" jumpers from 3-point range.

But where did the nickname originate from?

Why are Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson called the "Splash Brothers?"

The "Splash Brothers" nickname couldn't have caught on faster back in 2012 during Curry and Thompson's second season together.

The origin comes from a regular season game during the 2012-13 season where Curry and Thompson combined for seven 3-pointers in the first half against the Charlotte Bobcats, causing Warriors.com writer Brian Witt to tweet out the hashtag "#SplashBrothers" from the Warriors' official account.

Part of the reason it stuck so fast – aside from Curry and Thompson's wet shooting strokes — was because it was a perfect play on words from another famous Oakland-based duo, the "Bash Brothers."

The "Bash Brothers" were the Oakland Athletics' sluggers, Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, who bashed a bunch of home runs during their tenure as teammates, even bringing a championship to the city in 1989.

When Witt tweeted out the hashtag "#SplashBrothers," the nickname instantly resonated and became forever synonymous with the greatest shooting backcourt of all time.

“It’s my claim to fame,” Witt told Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports in an interview back in 2015. “It’s something no one can take away. It’s proof I lived on this earth that I created ‘The Splash Brothers.’”

Once Witt created the nickname, Curry and Thompson's marksmen-like shooting assured it would stick around.

Curry became the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers made this past season, solidifying something everyone already knew — that he is the best shooter the game has ever seen.

Thompson isn't all that far behind his backcourt-mate in league history, knocking down the 18th-most 3s to this point.

The duo also ranks first and third, respectively, in all time 3s made in the NBA playoffs and NBA Finals.
