Stephen Curry put on a show for the hometown fans on Dell Curry Night in Charlotte on Wednesday.

Curry, who hails from the city and played college ball at nearby Davidson, scored 28 of his 40 points in the third quarter against the Hornets after watching his father, Dell, be honored by the franchise he joined back in 1988.

The defending NBA MVP had 12 points in the first half before hitting 9 of 11 field-goal attempts (5 of 6 from 3-point range) in the third quarter. It is the fifth time he has scored at least 20 points in a quarter this season.

Golden State won 116-99, pushing its season-opening winning streak to 20 games — equaling a record set by the St. Louis Maroons baseball club in 1884 as the best start to a season among the four major sports.

Charlotte's other undefeated star, Cam Newton, was in attendance. The Panthers quarterback hung around after the game to give Curry some props.

"People ask me all the time, 'Do you talk about basketball to your son?'" Dell Curry said during the Hornets' broadcast. "What can I tell the MVP of the league?"

Not much on a night like that.
