It had been hours since Stephen A. Smith was wrong about something, so the ESPN personality couldn't let the opportunity pass him by.

Possibly sitting at home, away from the bright lights and cameras of the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader in Sports, the co-host of "First Take" spent Wednesday evening like many Americans — watching the Republican National Convention.
Smith, like many inside and outside Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena, was shocked when U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, ended his more-than-20-minute addresss to GOP supporters without lending an endorsement to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Cruz's refusal to do so wound up getting him mercilessly booed off the stage, despite an earlier reference to LeBron James.
Unlike most Americans, Smith couldn't just sit back and enjoy the show. He unloaded a pompous rant against Cruz's actions and ended up getting his facts wrong in the process.

You know what: when you speak as long as Ted Cruz has w/o mentioning @realDonaldTrump, you wanted the attention more than the presidency!

No excuse for Cruz to go this long w/o mentioning the nominee. That's just selfish. I'm not talking specific candidate; just decency
— Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) July 21, 2016
Whether he supports @realDonaldTrump or not, you support your party's choice. Comes across as sore loser! Perception glued to him 4ever!

Can't wait for the Democratic National Convention. I love this political stuff. And I know the DNC will put on a show
— Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) July 21, 2016
Smith even went back and forth with a few of his followers on the matter.
You know why @AsadMerchant33. Because all of that was supposed to be resolved BEFORE the convention. Or just don't show up.#ClassLess

Stop worrying about @realDonaldTrump . He's not the issue, @jazzyg201528. You do not show up and do what Cruz did. It was BUSH LEAGUE!
— Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) July 21, 2016
That's what you're not getting, @Andre_1k. It's about decorum and class. You just don't do that, no matter who it is. @realDonaldTrump

There's nothing wrong with the spirit of Smith's take. For all intents and purposes, Cruz showed he's not a ride-or-die Republican by throwing Trump under the proverbial bus. The letter of Smith's statements leave a lot to be desired, however. Cruz did, in fact, mention Trump by name to start his speech. "I congratulate Donald Trump on winning the nomination last night," Cruz said.
"And like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes prevail in November."

Far be it from Smith to let facts get in the way of a perfectly good chance to mouth off.
