"While we are disappointed in Sam's decision, we would like to sincerely thank him for his contributions over the past three seasons," Josh Harris, the 76ers' managing general partner, said in a statement. "There is no question that Sam's work has put us in a very strong position to take advantage of numerous opportunities for an exciting future."

JOSEPH: Hinkie improved NBA by destroying Sixers

The Vertical reports two-time NBA Executive of the Year Bryan Colangelo will replace Hinkie. Colangelo, the son of 76ers chairman Jerry Colangelo, stepped down as Raptors president in 2013.

The 76ers, who have the NBA's worst record (10-68) this season, have been perennial bottom feeders since Hinkie took over in 2013. They have drafted in the top five in each year of his tenure.

That includes the 2014 NBA Draft, when the team picked Joel Embiid, who has yet to suit up for an NBA game due to injury.

This article has been updated with official word of Hinkie's resignation and reports of Colangelo's hire.
