NBA commissioner Adam Silver hints at plans for European franchises image

In recent years, the NBA, NFL and MLB have all made expanded efforts to send their teams outside of the United States to an ever-expanding international fan base.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently spoke on the issue, saying that his overseas plans wouldn't include just one, but four franchises in Europe.

"It would be difficult for us to have one team in Europe," Silver told The Guardian. "We'd have to put both feet down. That would mean having four franchises in Europe."

Still, Silver admitted that the NBA isn't prepared to make such an ambitious leap into Europe just yet.

"We're not there yet," said Silver. "I know that as much growth as we've seen, we have a long way to go before we can sustain four franchises in Europe."

This season, the NBA scheduled two regular season games outside of the United States and Canada, along with five presesaon games spread across Germany, Turkey, Brazil and China.

The first regular season matchup took place in Mexico City between the Rockets and the Timberwolves.

Today, in London, the Bucks and the Knicks will tipoff at 3 p.m. at The O2 arena. Tickets for today's game sold out in less than an hour.

While NBA franchises in Europe may not be imminent, Silver is determined to make it happen in the future, saying this week that he believes it is the league's "manifest destiny to expand."
