The Lakers are moving on quickly in search of their new head coach and have set their sights on a familiar NBA face.
Former Pacers and Magic coach Frank Vogel is expected to interview for the position Thursday in California, The Los Angeles Times reported, citing unidentified sources.
Vogel likely will meet with team owner Jeanie Buss, along with general manager Rob Pelinka and the rest of Buss' staff. Vogel worked with the Lakers as a scout in 2005-06.
The news of the interview comes after negotiations fell through to hire former Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue as LA's new coach. Vogel was expected to be an associate head coach on Lue's staff if he had been hired.
Vogel took over as interim head coach for the Pacers in 2011, then was hired full time the following season. He led Indiana to the playoffs five of of six seasons, but the furthest the team made it was the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014. Both those years, the Pacers lost to LeBron James and the Heat.
Vogel's contract was not renewed by the Pacers at the end of the 2015-16 season, even though he's the franchise's most winningest coach at 250-181 record.
He was quickly hired by the Magic but was fired at the end of the 2017-18 season after posting a 54-110 record.
The Lakers' search for a new coach comes after the team fired Luke Walton in April after three seasons. Despite having James on the team this season, the Lakers (37-45) missed the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.
