The Lakers and Spurs played for the first time this season on Wednesday night, but we're all still waiting for LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama to share the court.
James missed Los Angeles' 122-119 victory — the second night of a back-to-back for the Lakers — with a left calf injury. Anthony Davis carried the load in James' absence, totaling 37 points, 10 rebounds and four steals in 38 minutes.
Wembanyama certainly did his part in the loss. The 19-year-old rookie tallied 30 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks, but it wasn't enough to stop the Spurs' losing streak, which now stands at 18 games.
Though the two have yet to play against each other, James and Wembanyama already share a strong connection. Pundits and fans have anointed countless players as James' heir apparent, and Wembanyama — a 7-4 marvel who grew up revering James — is next in line.
Wembanyama's rookie campaign is the most-hyped debut season since James' in 2003. So far, he has shown brilliant flashes, averaging 19.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.
But James isn't slowing down in his 21st NBA season. The 38-year-old is averaging 25.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game and recently led the Lakers to the inaugural In-Season Tournament championship.
