The third iteration of the battle for Los Angeles kicks off tonight between the Lakers and the Clippers, both of which are coming off consecutive wings in their past two contests.
LeBron James and the Lakers beat Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers in the two sides' most recent matchups – a 106-103 win on Jan. 7 and a 130-125 overtime win on Nov. 1. James and forward Anthony Davis combined for 47 points and 62 points in those two games, respectively, for the Lakers. Leonard and Paul George, meanwhile, scored 37 points and 73 points in those games, respectively.
James won't play in this one, though, after The Athletic's Shams Charania reported the Lakers forward will miss Tuesday's game with an ankle injury. The Clippers will also still be without center Ivica Zuba. He's been dealing with a calf strain for the past week and won't be re-evaluated for a potential return until midway through February.
There is more on the line for both sides than just city pride, though. The Lakers sit ninth in the Western Conference at 22-22 and need a win if they hope to build some momentum for a playoff push after the All-Star break. The Clipper sit just 2.5 games back of the conference-leading Minnesota Timberwolves and could pull within a half-game of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets with a win as well.
The Clippers' record isn't the only thing they're better than the Lakers at this season. They have a top-10 offense and defense this year, scoring 117.8 points and allow just 112.0 points per game this year. The Lakers, meanwhile, score 114.8 points and allowing just 115.6 points per game this year.
The Clippers' trio of Leonard, George and James Harden have been turned up the heat recently. They combined for 57 points in Sunday's win over the Brooklyn Nets and 70 in a win over the Thunder this past week. Without James, the Lakers will lean on Davis and D'Angelo Russell. The Lakers took down the Portland Trailblazers behind Russell's 34 but loss to the Nets despite 70 points from the trio of James, Davis and Russell.
