Thunder fan launches petition for town of Durant to change its name to Westbrook image

Thunder fans are still smarting from the departure of superstar Kevin Durant for Golden State this offseason. You've seen the angry posts on social media, and the fans burning his jersey.

One jilted fan is taking his frustration and bitterness to another level. According to ESPN, Ryan Nazari of Edmond, Okla., has launched a petition on Change.org, requesting the southeastern Oklahoma town of Durant (pop: 15,856) change its name to Westbrook. That would honor the Thunder's perennial All-Star guard Russell Westbrook, who signed a multi-year extension with the team earlier this month.

If you don't believe Nazari is still extremely bitter, here's the introduction to his petition:

"Ladies and gentlemen, the great state of Oklahoma has been betrayed. As many of you know, Kevin Durant has left our state, torn out our hearts, and left our beloved Oklahoma City Thunder in depleted shape. All of this after even being offered a cabinet position for the State of Oklahoma. It is because of this heinous action that I believe the State of Oklahoma has a responsibility to change the name of the City of Durant to Westbrook, the man who is loyal, whom we believe in, and who will lead our team to glory.

"Yes, it is understood that the city Durant was not named after the evil Kevin Durant, but it is just another hideous reminder of what happened to our community."

Nazari is not alone in his feelings. As of early Friday afternoon, 2,060 people had signed the petition.

Durant may be best known as the home of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where Dennis Rodman played. Oh, it also has a statue honoring the World's Largest Peanut. And it bills itself the Magnolia Capitol of Oklahoma.

If the town of Durant (which is actually pronounced Doo-Rant) were to change its name to honor a professional athlete, it would be more likely to adopt the name Romo, for Cowboys star Tony Romo; Durant is fewer than 90 miles from Dallas, versus 150 miles from Oklahoma City.
