Nowitzki, 37, has not decided whether the 2016-17 season will be his last. That may depend on where Dallas is a year from now.
“I always want to make the playoffs and more," he told reporters. "If that’s what the Mavs are going to do — rebuild — then we’ll have to wait and see.”
The Mavericks are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a 35-36 record.
Nowitzki has spent his entire career with Dallas after being traded from the Milwaukee in the 1999 NBA Draft. He became the fourth player in the last 50 years to score 40 or more points after age 37 on Sunday against the Trail Blazers.
He is averaging 18.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game this season.
