It took less than 15 minutes on Brooklyn Nets media day to show why they will be front and center in the spotlight all season long.

First came the reports that Kyrie Irving would not be available on Monday due too heath and safety protocols. That comes as no real shock given recent reports about Irving's COVID vaccination status.

Irving's absence was unexpectedly filled by legendary late night host David Letterman, who showed up to play the role of reporter on behalf of 'Basketball Digest.'

Letterman wasted no time getting in on the action, asking several questions do Durant.

 

In addition to that hard-hitting journalism, Letterman also asked Durant if he would be willing to play for the Knicks on Nets off days and if playing against the Pelicans "makes him giggle."

Aside from Letterman's unexpected cameo, Durant was also asked a more serious questions about Irving's vaccination status and potential impact on the team. "That’s on Kyrie. It’s his personal decision... I expect it not to be an issue. We trust in Kyrie and I expect us to have our whole team at some point."

Reporters also asked Durant about his extension and the pending contract negotiations for Irving and James Harden. "I just wanted to be here. I thought it was the perfect timing for me to be so. We all three have talked about playing together for a long time, but their decisions are on their time." Durant signed a four-year, $198 million extension in the offseason that keeps him under contract in Brooklyn through the end of the 2025-26 season.

Following media day, the Nets are leaving for San Diego where they will hold training camp. The Nets first preseason game is Sunday, Oct. 3 against the Lakers. 

Brooklyn opens the regular season on Oct. 19 against thte Milwaukee Bucks in a rematch of their second round series.
