The first woman to become a full-time NBA assistant coach now gets to help mold the youngest players in the Spurs' system.

Becky Hammon will coach the Spurs' team at the Las Vegas Summer League, according to the San Antonio Express-News. It's an important assignment in a coaching career that often goes to associate head coaches and other top assistants.

Hammon was a WNBA star but retired after last season to take an assistant coaching position under coach Gregg Popovich. The decision has put her on track to have a very real chance at being the first woman to be a head coach in the NBA, though that still seems down the line because of her inexperience. Hammon, 38, was praised by Spurs coaches and players for her work in her first season with the team, helped by knowing many of the players because she was a six-time WNBA All-Star for the San Antonio Silver Stars.

The Spurs also will participate in the Utah Jazz Summer League, which is a four-day tournament before the bigger Las Vegas Summer League opens. They will be coached by assistant Will Hardy in Salt Lake City.
