Massive news broke on Thursday as the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly targeting UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley as the franchise's next head coach.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news, which raises questions about the Lakers' offseason and 2024 NBA Draft plans. Hurley is known as a top-tier developmental coach, meaning L.A. could zero in on high-upside prospects if he's hired.
The obvious targets are Hurley's UConn players, such as Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle, or Tristen Newton. Clingan and Castle are expected to go off the board prior to the Lakers' No. 17 pick, but Newton is a possible acquisition at No. 55.
Many are speculating that back-to-back Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Zach Edey could join the Lakers at No. 17. The Purdue center is one of the most proven players in collegiate basketball, but it is a mystery how his game will translate to the NBA. Edey averaged 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds on 62.3% shooting in 39 games last season. Learning under Hurley's guidance while backing up star Anthony Davis could be the perfect situation for Edey while also being a good fit for the Lakers.
The biggest issue with drafting Newton in the second round is that LeBron James' son, Bronny, may be on the board. The USC Trojans guard had an underwhelming freshman campaign but is remaining in the draft. If Bronny is available with five picks remaining, it's hard to imagine the front office passing on him because of potential tension with James. It's also worth noting that the Lakers are reportedly interested in drafting Bronny in the second round.
If the Lakers hire Hurley, that could jumpstart an NBA offseason that's sure to be filled with fireworks. While the hire would certainly help them win now, it could also affect how they approach this summer.
