With the Los Angeles Lakers preparing to bring in 7-foot center Christian Koloko to help strengthen their frontcourt, it was time for them to cut ties with one of their three two-way prospects.
Surprisingly, the Lakers elected to part ways with an undrafted three-point maestro.
“Los Angeles Lakers are waiving two-way guard Blake Hinson," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported Sunday. “Hinson averaged 18.5 points and shot 42.1% from 3-point range at Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-8 guard’s shooting intrigued teams following the draft. He’s now expected to draw interest in free agency.”
Hinson didn’t make the best impression on the Lakers in the Summer League, but his collegiate resume speaks for itself. At Pittsburgh, Hinson’s noteworthy efficiency from beyond the arc was on full display. As a junior and senior, he was a top-five three-point shooter in the prestigious ACC. During the 2022-23 season, Hinson netted 38% of his three-point field goals and helped the Panthers end a six-year NCAA Tournament drought.
He may launch a few head-scratching jumpers from time to time, but he’s not a guy who defenders should feel comfortable helping off of at this level.
However, regarding two-way contracts, the Lakers are rolling with Christian Koloko, Colin Castleton and Armel Traore . Hinson may secure a deal with an NBA organization in the future, but he’ll have to be patient until another opportunity arises.
