The Los Angeles Clippers have re-signed their starting center Ivica Zubac for three years, $58.6 million, per Adrian Wojnarowski. This puts his total contract at four years, $70 million. Zubac is currently going into his sixth year with the Clippers, and his ninth in LA.
Zubac is a solid big man, with his 2023-2024 averages of 11.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, an assist and a block a game. His presence in the paint is immense, with a little over 60% of two point attempts made. He also is a great rim protector, as his large 7’0 frame is pretty hard to move around.
Is he worth $19.5 million dollars a year? Not really. For comparison, earlier today TJ McConnell of the Indiana Pacers signed a four year, $45 million dollar extension, and his career average in points was only two less than Zubac, and he averaged one point less last season.
This overpay was probably due to the fact the Clippers lost one of their superstars in Paul George to free agency, and traded away star Russell Westbrook, who was a key player off the bench. Left with two aging stars in James Harden and Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers were probably desperate to keep any of their remaining talent.
