The Chicago Bulls are trying to rebuild their culture, but they haven't made the sufficient moves to execute that plan.
Chicago needs to move Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucević as soon as possible. Neither player does anything for their youth movement or plans to tank over the next 12-24 months.
Vucević doesn't have suitors, but pair him with Coby White in a deal, and suddenly half the league will come inquiring.
Dealing White is a necessary evil for Chicago if it wants to rebuild. Given the need to pair Vucević or LaVine with valuable assets in order to move them, the Bulls can't afford to make many of their players untouchable.
Josh Giddey is a good piece to build around and Matas Buzelis is showing early signs of potential, but virtually everyone else -- White included -- should be on the table.
In trading a Vucević-White package, Chicago should be seeking expiring contracts in return and/or players that can help turn their culture around. A deal with the Memphis Grizzlies in which the Bulls receive Marcus Smart, Santi Aldama, Derrick Rose, and a first round pick would help both teams.
All of the Grizzlies players in this deal are on expiring contracts, except Smart (2 years remaining), but he's the ultimate culture builder that Chicago has lacked in recent years. Smart wouldn't demand touches on offense, but he'd immediately make the Bulls tougher and serve as a tremendous defensive influence on their young talent.
Stashing away another first round pick in a loaded draft would be huge for Chicago, too.
From the Grizzlies perspective, they'd be acquiring two plug-and-play scorers who would help solve their biggest weakness -- scoring the basketball when Ja Morant is off the floor.
Derrick Rose returning to Chicago as he nears retirement would also be a storybook finish to his career that he and fans deserve.
