NASCAR at Phoenix race results, highlights from Joey Logano's win at FanShield 500 image

A second victory of the season seemed possible for Joey Logano on Lap 136. It seemed like a long shot on Lap 137.

He sat in the fifth position going into a pit stop. His crew took off a tire and it rolled from the inside half of the pit box out to the outside half of the pit box. He was sent to the rear for an uncontrolled tire on pit road. Slowly but surely, Logano made his way through the field on the remaining 175 laps before passing teammate Brad Keselowski for the lead with 20 laps to go. He never looked back en route to his second victory in the season's first four races.

Logano would have liked to win it in the first 312 laps. He likely would have, too, but two cautions in the last 10 laps led to the first overtime of the 2020 season. He had the lead on the restart with Kevin Harvick right behind, looking for his shot to take get by. But with only two laps in the extra session, Logano ended the overtime period where he started it: at the front of the pack.

The FanShield 500 is Logano's 25th career win. He's just the fourth driver to reach 35 wins before the age of 30.

"That was a pretty intense last 30 minutes or hour of the race," Logano said. "Couldn't be more proud of this team. Two wins already in the books. We got to keep this thing rocking."

Chase Elliot and Kevin Harvick started the race in the first and second positions, respectively, and dominated the race early on. Elliot led a race-high 94 laps, including the first 61, and finished seventh. Harvick led the second-most laps, 67, and finished .276-seconds behind Logano. Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five.

It's only the fourth race of the season, but the FanShield 500 in Phoenix might have provided drivers and fans a glimpse into how the championship race could play out in November. Homestead-Miami Speedway has been the final race in the NASCAR playoffs for the last 18 years, but this season the champion will be determined in Phoenix.

ISM Raceway underwent a $178 million upgrade this offseason. The FanShield 500 was NASCAR's first chance to show it off — and also the last chance for drivers to get a feel for it before the final race of the season in November. The last time NASCAR raced at ISM Raceway, there were only eight lead changes in the entire race. Fans were, quite frankly, bored with such little action. The move was made to go from the "high downforce" cars to "low downforce" cars with much smaller spoilers and front overhangs, which decreases control and emphasizes skill.

NASCAR got exactly what it wanted. Sunday's race was filled with action, 20 lead changes and exciting restarts.
