A race flagman was killed at Bronson Speedway on Sunday when a racing pickup truck lost control.

The Gainesville Sun reported that a small red pickup truck spun counterclockwise into the infield, where it hit 49-year-old Buddy Jack Howell.

Paramedics rushed to the scene on Sunday afternoon in Bronson, Florida, but Howell was pronounced dead a short time later at a Gainesville hospital, according to Levy County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Scott Tummond.

“It’s a tragic accident,” Tummond said. “This wasn’t a race with high speeds.”

Tummond said drivers prefer the lower portion of the Bronson track due to more traction, but the pickup that struck Howell was riding high.
