Serena Williams won her 50th consecutive match at a WTA Premier event by overcoming Carla Suarez Navarro in their quarterfinals match in the Madrid Open on Thursday.
The world No. 1 had survived a real scare against Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday, saving three match points to eventually prevail, but she had no such concerns against the Spaniard.

Williams broke her opponent four times en route to a 6-1, 6-3 victory, setting up a semifinal clash with Petra Kvitova.
"I learned a lot from yesterday," Williams said. "I just really have to stay focused. I had a lot of opportunities in that (Azarenka) match — I probably should have closed it out in two sets.
"I approach everything as I want to do the best that I can. I'm so determined for every single point. If I lost the match, it's OK, as long as I know I gave the best I could on that day. That's all I can do."
Williams, winner of this tournament in 2012 and 2013, will meet Kvitova, the 2011 champion. Kvitova beat Irina-Camelia Begu, 7-5, 6-3. Meanwhile, defending champion Maria Sharapova was taken the distance by Caroline Wozniacki, before prevailing 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
There were nervy moments for the Russian when she found herself a break down in the deciding set at 2-1, but she reeled off five of the next six games to seal her semifinal berth.
She will now take on Svetlana Kuznetsova, who came from a set down to defeat Lucie Safarova, 5-7, 7-6, (7-5), 7-6 (7-3).
