Defending champion Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the BMW PGA Championship after a nightmare second round in the European Tour tournament.
Having started Friday six shots behind the leader, the world No. 1 — a winner in two of his previous three starts — fell further off the pace courtesy of bogeys on the third and sixth holes.

After a birdie at No. 8, McIlroy carded four bogeys on the back nine together with a double bogey on No. 11. His final total for the round: 78.
That made for quite a turnaround on the heels of McIlroy's showing last weekend in Charlotte, N.C., when he shot a 61 on Saturday en route to winning the Wells Fargo Championship by seven strokes.

After his round Friday, McIlroy said: " I won't read too much into this missed cut. It was inevitable at some point that the run was going to come to a bit of an end."
The BMW PGA Championship continues this weekend at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England, The tournament is a major event on the European Tour.
