Petra Kvitova stormed to a second WTA Madrid Open title with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The two-time Wimbledon champion saw off Serena Williams in the semifinals and her irresistible form proved too much for Kuznetsova to handle.

Despite beating Russian compatriot Maria Sharapova to reach the final, Kuznetsova was unable to scale those heights again, losing nine games in succession as her chances unraveled completely.

Kuznetsova held from 0-40 down in her opening service game, but she was unable to repeat the feat next as Kvitova took a 3-1 lead.

A crunching forehand down the line after another Kuznetsova service game went to deuce gave Kvitova a second break and the Czech closed out a 6-1 triumph in an opening set where she lost only one point on her first serve.

That 26-minute blitz prompted Kuznetsova to take an injury timeout, but the procession continued when she returned as Kvitova made it six games in a row, going a set and a break up.

The world No. 29 briefly threatened to stop the rout, but could not prevent the fourth seed from breaking to 30 for a 3-0 second-set lead, before failing to capitalize on a deuce game the next time she received – the closest Kvitova came to conceding a break point.

Kuznetsova belatedly got on the second-set scoreboard, but only by saving further break points. She held to love at the next time of asking before Kvitova did likewise to seal an emphatic triumph.
