Novak Djokovic lost Wednesday, a surprising development for the world's No. 1 tennis player.
Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic secured the biggest win of his career, dumping defending Monte Carlo Masters champion Djokovic out in Wednesday's second round.
Vesely is No. 55 in world ATP rankings. He came into the match without a win against top-10 opposition in his career. But, Vesely, 22, handed Djokovic his first loss in a completed match on the ATP Tour in 2016, prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Djokovic's only other loss this year came in February in Dubai, when he retired from a quarterfinal match following the first set because of an eye infection.
It leaves Djokovic with little preparation on clay as he looks to complete the career Grand Slam at next month's French Open.

Vesely's power had Djokovic penned back throughout an error-strewn first set. Djokovic seemed to struggle to judge his shots as he routinely found the net or went long, as he did to lose his first set in 12 matches.
Despite recovering to win the second set, in which Vesely showed nervousness, Djokovic couldn't stave off the upset.
the French Open begins May 22. It was the only Grand Slam tournament Djokovic failed to win last year. Djokovic won this year's first tennis major, the Australian Open.
