Aussie Michael Matthews claimed his first stage victory in the Tour de France, edging a thrilling six-way sprint over the final 250 meters on Tuesday.

Matthews (Orica-BikeExchange) just edged Tinkoff's Peter Sagan, who had led for much of the final 10 kilometers, while Dimension Data's Edvald Boasson Hagen came home third in the 197-kilometer 10th stage between Escaldes Engordany and Revel.

Also in the lead group at the end of Tuesday's stage were Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing), Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R La Mondiale) and Matthews' teammate Daryl Impey.

It was Van Avermaet, winner of stage five, who made the first real move in the home stretch, before Matthews came through to get his wheel over the line first.

The peloton, including general classification leader Chris Froome, finished almost 10 minutes behind Matthews and the rest.
