Rory McIlroy is looking forward to getting back on the golf course and expects to be challenging in the European Tour Final Series.

McIlroy had four weeks away from the sport after the BMW Championship and is aiming to finish a troubled season with a strong finish — starting at the BMW Masters in Shanghai.

McIlroy's best finish on tour this season was a second place at the Texas Open in April, while in the majors he has only finished as high as eighth.

In his last event on the PGA Tour he finished seven-over par — tied for 59th place — which meant he missed the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

After a break he returned at the Korea Open — where he finished second — and he hopes he can use that momentum to compete in Shanghai.

"I'm excited, it's a place that I've done well at before," he said. "I won in 2011 even though it wasn't a European Tour event then and played well last year.

"It's a golf course that I've done well on before and a golf course I feel like I can do well on again, so I'm excited to be here and excited to try and finish the season strongly.

"Four weeks off at home has been nice. It was a nice return to competitive golf last week in Korea, a nice way to break myself into this end of season run, played pretty well for the most part.

"I didn't hole enough putts at all, I felt like I left a lot of shots behind there at the weekend, but good to get back into some competitive play, and looking forward to this week and finishing the season strongly and getting a bit of momentum."
