Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez is hoping to break a Ryder Cup record by becoming the oldest man to play at the prestigious competition.

Jimenez, who recently turned 50, continues to roll back the years and extended his own record as the oldest winner in European Tour history by retaining the Hong Kong Open in December.

He has now set his sights on usurping an 87-year milestone set by Ted Ray, who was 50 years, two months and five days when he represented the European team in 1927.

"If I play well, I believe I will be on the team," he said ahead of the Volvo Golf Champions that starts on Thursday in Durban, South Africa.

"It would mean a lot to me. I'm still breaking records. It would be nice. I broke my own record of being the oldest winner, so it would be nice to get another record."

Jimenez has competed four times for the European team, the most recent in 2010 in a winning effort at Celtic Manor.

Though he was not part of the famous "miracle in Medinah" team that defeated the USA in 2012, he was one of Jose Maria Olazabal's vice captains.

Jimenez could potentially take on that role under 2014 captain Paul McGinley, but concedes he intends to be there in a playing capacity.

"I'm going to keep working hard on my game because I would like to be there with the clubs in the hands. If you are not playing well, you don't want to be on the team," Jiminez said.

"It's a lot of responsibility. It means a lot to me and many players and you need to know that you are in good shape."
