Formula One: Sergio Perez confirms McLaren exit image

Mexico's Sergio Perez has confirmed that he will leave McLaren at the end of the Formula One season.

Perez was chosen to replace Lewis Hamilton, who departed for Mercedes, for the current campaign but the team has been blighted by inconsistent performances. Perez has 35 points to leave him 12th in the drivers' standings.

Number one driver Jenson Button had secured his seat for the 2014 campaign, with rumors circulating that Kevin Magnussen — a product of McLaren's Young Driver Programme — is set to take the second spot.

Perez, 23, will compete in the final two races in the United States and Brazil.

"First of all, I would like to thank McLaren for giving me the opportunity to be with them this season," Perez said in a statement on his official website.

"It has been an honor for me to have been in one of the most competitive teams in the sport and I do not regret even a bit having joined them.

"I have always given the best of me for the team and still despite this I could not achieve what I aimed for in this historic team.

"I am committed to delivering very good results in these two races, especially in Austin. I have met a lot of new people at McLaren this season and I have made many good friends as well.

"I would like to wish the team the very best in the future. I will always be a fan of McLaren. In the meanwhile I will be looking at my future to ensure my position in the best possible package to fight for wins."

Perez's next move has yet to be decided, but speculation has continued to link him with a move to Force India.
