Roger Federer was left to enjoy a "special moment" after his 1,000th ATP Tour win — the Brisbane International final.
Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, overcame the challenge of Canada's Milos Raonic to reach the landmark, a feat achieved by only Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl.
It was Federer's 83rd career title, a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 triumph on Sunday.
"Special moment, no doubt about it. Are you kidding me?" he said.
"I played a lot of tennis over the years, so to get to 1000 match wins in front of you guys, it means a lot to me," Federer said.
"It was a great match. I can't thank you [the fans] enough for coming out this week and supporting tennis."
Raonic, who enjoyed promising spells of play before fluffing his lines at 4-5 in the third, jokingly suggested Federer still had room for improvement.
"I honestly thought you were playing for 2,000 wins," he said. "I think you need to step it up."
Federer responded in kind in front of an appreciative crowd, which was brought to its feet when the 33-year-old later suggested he would return next year.
"I hope you get to 1,000 match wins and you can still walk when you get to my age," he said.
Federer will now hope to claim his first major since 2012 when the Australian Open begins on Jan. 19.
