Serena Williams' run at the Swedish Open came to an abrupt end Thursday. Williams was forced to retire injured before her second-round match against Klara Koukalova.

Fresh from claiming her second 'Serena Slam' — holding all four grand slam titles at the same time — with her victory at Wimbledon, Williams eased through Wednesday's opening match, beating Ysaline Bonaventure in 53 minutes.

Williams addressed the crowd to explain her decision, saying: "In my warm-up this morning, unfortunately, my elbow started hurting.

"I had the same problem at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. I don't want to make it worse."

A 21-time grand slam champion, Williams appeared to have picked up right where she left off at the All England Club, as she claimed her 40th WTA Tour win of the year, but she will not be making it 41 in Bastad.
