Two-time Tour de France runner-up Andreas Kloden has retired from cycling at the age of 38.
Kloden, from Germany, brings the curtain down on a 16-year career that also saw him claim a bronze medal in the road race at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He failed to find a team for the 2014 season.
He finished second in 2004 and 2006, behind Lance Armstrong in the first of those. Armstrong was later removed from the records because of doping offenses.
Kloden's later years in the sport were blighted by allegations of drug-taking, which he always vehemently denied. He rarely speaks to the media after the accusations were published.
"I have nothing to confess," he told the Weser-Kurier at the time.
Kloden rode for the RadioShack-Leopard team in 2013 and finished 30th at this year's Tour de France.
He had victories in the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Tour of Romandie and the Tour of the Basque Country.
