ESPY Awards 2016: Bill Simmons honored Serena Williams when ESPN wouldn't image

Bill Simmons is still sticking it to ESPN, and this time it doesn't even matter if he's being petty.

He was spot-on.

The former head of Grantland.com devoted four minutes of commentary to Serena Williams on his new HBO show, "Any Given Wednesday." He did it the same night WNBA rookie Breanna Stewart took home the ESPY for best female athlete, an award Serena should've have had locked down with more certainty than an inmate serving a life sentence on Alcatraz.

Williams tied Steffi Graf's record of 22 Grand Slam women's tennis singles titles Saturday by winning Wimbledon for the seventh time.

FLASHBACK: Ben Affleck ruined Simmons' premiere

The complete list of award winners was floating around well before Simmons' show aired, so as far as we know, it's not beyond the realm of possibility he could have planned his tribute to take aim at his former employer. Then again, his show could've been pre-recorded. Maybe it's all a big coincidence. One thing is certain, it wouldn't be beneath him to take a swipe at the Worldwide Leader.

Aside from his attempt to compare Williams' excellence to that of great boxers of old, Simmons' synopsis of Serena's significance couldn't be better.

No disrespect to Stewart, but Williams is one of the greatest athletes of all time.
