Andy Murray's thoughts were on returning home after he lost out to Novak Djokovic in Sunday's Australian Open final.

With wife Kim expecting their first child, and with his father-in-law Nigel Sears collapsing while watching a Melbourne match last week, Murray was keen to get back to his family.

"I'm proud that I got into this position, just quite looking forward to getting home now," Murray said.

Djokovic claimed a record-equaling sixth Australian Open title 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (7).

"It's been hard. Regardless of today's result, it's been hard," Murray told reporters. "Had I lost in the third or fourth round it still would have been difficult with everything that's happened."

Nigel Sears was in Melbourne to coach Ana Ivanovic. He recovered and returned to Britain. Had Sears been severely stricken, Murray said, he would have quit the tournament.

Murray saluted his wife in a post-match interview and said he would be on the first plane to England.

Murray lost his fifth title match at Melbourne, four of them to Djokovic. He is 9-21 all-time against the world's best player.

Djokovic took advantage of Murray in the first set, which lasted about 30 minutes. Observers said Murray seemed distracted, and he was noticeably irritated at himself as he struggled to stay in the match.
