With the trade deadline merely hours away, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to make another splash on the market.
Relief pitching remains a priority for Philadelphia's general manager Dave Dombrowski, even after the Phillies traded for Carlos Estévez over the weekend, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
"The Philadelphia Phillies continue to search for additional relief help, even after acquiring Carlos Estévez from the Angels," Rosenthal said on Monday.
Where will Dombrowski turn for further bullpen reinforcements?
The obvious answer is Tanner Scott of the Miami Marlins, but a sleeper option for the Phillies is Kyle Finnegan of the Washington Nationals.
Rosenthal reported on Saturday that Philadelphia was interested in Finnegan.
"The Philadelphia Phillies continue to canvass the market for relievers," Rosenthal said. "Like every other team seeking high-leverage relievers, the Phillies also are in on the Miami Marlins’ Tanner Scott and the Nationals’ Kyle Finnegan."
Finnegan, like Scott, is likely to skyrocket in price in the final hours before the deadline. The Nationals are also not wholly committed to moving Finnegan, which will only add to the cost required to pry him away.
At the same time, Dombrowski has been known to overpay for assets, often to his long-term benefit.
With the Phillies clearly in contention for a championship, no one would be surprised if Dombrowski pulled the trigger on a Finnegan trade, even at an exorbitant overpay.
