The Philadelphia Phillies are on top, leading the Atlanta Braves by eight games in the National League East while also holding on to the best record in Major League Baseball.
By all means, this should be the year that the Phillies become World Series champions. However, that doesn't mean that the team is going to sit on its laurels. In fact, Grant Brisbee, Andy McCullough, and Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic predict that Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski is going to make a big move for Mason Miller of the Oakland Athletics.
"The Phillies are good enough to win it all. But it would be on brand for Dave Dombrowski to trawl the market for a major addition — something like Oakland reliever Mason Miller. The Athletics are expected to ask a lot for Miller. Has there ever been an executive with a stronger track record of making these sorts of deals than Dombrowski?"
While the Athletics have reportedly attached a hefty price tag to the rookie reliever, it's not without warrant. Miller has proven to have one of the best arms in the business, boasting the highest chase rate, whiff percentage, and strikeout percentage in the league, mainly because of his 101 mph fastball.
Obtaining Miller is going to be expensive, there's no doubt about that. But for a team that wants to guarantee their place at the World Series, it's a price the Phillies would be willing to pay.
