At first glance, the Philadelphia Phillies don’t appear to have many flaws.
It’s hard to find fault with a squad 26 games over .500 heading into Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.
But nothing in sports is guaranteed, and the Phillies may be looking to stack the deck in their favor even more.
According to Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, Philadelphia could be hunting for an additional arm out of the bullpen to join José Alvarado and company.
"The Phillies could try to add a closer, although, with José Alvarado, Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, and Orion Kerkering, they don't need to add to the bullpen," Kelly said. "It would be more of a case of the rich getting richer."
Perhaps the most prominent name that could enter the market is Oakland Athletics rookie closer Mason Miller. As the A’s flounder in last place in the American League West, several teams have set their sights on the budding star.
In the postseason, where one swing can change the course of a series, having pitchers who can rack up strikeouts isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.
If there’s one thing that Miller has proven, he can make batters swing and miss.
The right-hander has 55 strikeouts in just 29.2 innings pitched and a solid 2.12 ERA.
Miller is tied for fourth in the American League in saves (12) and has just one blown save in 13 opportunities. If he somehow is available, Philadelphia should get Oakland on the phone as soon as possible.
