The Philadelphia Phillies widely are considered to be one of the top contenders to win the World Series this season.
Philadelphia is in a fantastic spot right now and sits atop the National League East with an impressive 73-51 record. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have more wins in the National League right now with 74.
The Phillies have a good chance of making a deep run in the playoffs this year but like every other contender could use bullpen help. An old friend surprisingly is available and could help. Former Phillies pitcher Héctor Neris is available after being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs and clearing waivers, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
"Chicago Cubs news: Reliever Héctor Neris was DFA'd and has already cleared waivers, sources tell ESPN," Rogers said. "He's being released. Jack Neely, acquired from the (New York Yankees) in the Mark Leiter Jr trade, is being called up to take his place."
Neris began his big-league career with the Phillies in 2014 and spent the first eight seasons of his career in Philadelphia. Over that stretch, he appeared in 405 games and had a 3.42 ERA. A reunion with him would help Philadelphia down the stretch.
He has been solid this season and has a 3.89 ERA in 46 appearances and likely will find a new opportunity soon.
