The New York Yankees are in the middle of an intense race for the division crown with the Baltimore Orioles as a vital offseason slowly approaches.
It's been said plenty that the main focus for the Yankees this offseason will be the massive contract they must give to superstar Juan Soto in free agency.
With that said, there are other areas the Yankees must address as well. Adding depth to the starting rotation behind ace Gerrit Cole, who could opt out of his contract, is one of those needs.
In listing the top offseason landing spots for Orioles ace Corbin Burnes if he hits the market, Bobo P. Goswami of Sportskeeda believes the Yankees lead the pack.
"Corbin Burnes may not be the highest priority for the New York Yankees, but they need another dominant starting along with Gerrit Cole to push the team forward," Goswami wrote. "Marcus Stroman has done a decent job, and the emergence of Luis Gil is another positive, but Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes haven't been very reliable. Keeping Juan Soto at the Bronx will be their main target this year.
"Nevertheless, the Yankees could flex their financial muscle to land both Soto and Burnes."
It would certainly be an intriguing proposition for the Yankees to have a starting rotation being led by Cole and Burnes. Whether they could pull off signing Soto and Burnes remains to be seen.
The Orioles made a big trade last offseason to acquire him from the Milwaukee Brewers and aside from a rough August, Burnes has been the ace Baltimore has needed.
The 29-year-old has a 3.19 ERA, 154 strikeouts and 41 walks in 28 starts this season.
