The New York Yankees will promote talented catcher Gary Sanchez on Wednesday to face the New York Mets, according to MLB.com.

Sanchez will be in the lineup as the designated hitter against left-handed pitcher Steven Matz in the third game of the Subway Series. Brian McCann will be the catcher.

According to the report, the Yankees are not planning on waiving struggling Alex Rodriguez to promote Sanchez, but his arrival could further affect A-Rod's already declining playing time.

Sanchez, 23, is batting .285/.340/.473 with 10 homers over 70 games at Triple-A this year. He will see time at catcher and designated hitter, while McCann will bounce among catcher, first base and DH.

At 41, Rodriguez, who is batting just .205 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs this season, will likely draw few starts now, filling in when needed late in games.

He is due the rest of his $21 million salary and bonus this year and the same amount in 2017, according to Spotrac.com.
