New York Yankees rookie Luis Gil will be back on the mound Sunday.
The star rookie has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 21 due to a lower back strain, Gil is set to make his first rehab start Sunday with the Double-A Somerset Patriots.
The breakout rookie threw a live bullpen earlier this week and was expected to make his first rehab start this weekend. Things went according to plan so Gil continues to move in the right direction.
The Yankees need all the help they can get in a starting rotation that has been extremely unstable since the middle of June.
Entering Sunday, Gil is 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA, 144 strikeouts and 66 walks across 124.2 innings pitched this season.
He got off to an electric start with a 9-1 record and a 2.03 ERA to go along with 96 strikeouts through his first 14 starts.
However, his struggles have mounted during the second half of the season. In his last 10 starts, Gil is 3-5 with a 5.84 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 27 walks in 44.2 innings.
The Yankees are also hoping to see the return of Clarke Schmidt soon. He last threw in a rehab start Wednesday in Triple-A, tossing 3.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
Schmidt extended his way up to 58 pitches so it's likely he'll need another rehab start before making his return. He has been on the injured list since May 30 after suffering a lat strain.
