Luis Gil has officially etched his name into New York Yankees lore after his career-best outing Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.
In a 6-1 win, Gil tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball allowing five hits and one walk while striking out 14. He threw 98 pitches (65 strikes) and generated 22 swings and misses.
Gil broke the Yankees franchise record for most strikeouts in a single game for a rookie pitcher en route to his fifth win of the season.
While the ace of the rotation, Gerrit Cole, continues to work his way back on the injured list, the Yankees rotation has stepped up in a big way.
Gil is among those players who have exceeded expectations. He owns a 5-1 record with a 2.39 ERA. He's recorded 62 strikeouts and 27 walks in 49 innings pitched.
The Yankees continue to be one of the hottest teams in baseball riding a six-game winning streak and having won 12 of their last 14 games.
